Tuning in to Teens – FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions on the Tuning in to Teens program delivered by Parent Connections.
Parent Connections provides in-depth workshops teaching the techniques of emotional coaching based on the Tuning in to Teens™ program. Both Michelle and Tara are trained facilitators of Tuning in to Teens™.
This program is essentially about increasing the connection between the parent and teen through improving the emotional communication in the family.
Click here for a broad explanation of what the program is: Tuning in to Teens Overview.
What is the “Tuning in to Teens” program, and how does it differ from other parenting programs?
Tuning in to Teens is a program that helps parents and teenagers connect better emotionally.
Unlike some parenting programs, it specifically focuses on the emotional needs of adolescents and teaches parents essential skills in emotion coaching.
Our 6-week program will give you practical strategies and tools to help you better connect with your teen, work through any issues as they arise, and create a calm environment.
This workshop is tailored to suit your needs: we cover topics that impact each attendee and their family. It’s not textbook theory – it’s applying strategies straight away for your family.
We focus on: nurturing healthy communication with your teen, understanding your teen’s behaviour, and building stronger relationships between the two of you.
It will also help you develop a clear direction for your family and feel supported as a parent through our group discussions.
Who created the program, and is it proven to work?
The program was developed by experts from The Mindful Centre for Training and Research in Developmental Health as part of the University of Melbourne. The team included Professor Sophie Havighurst, Ann Harley and Dr Christiane Kehoe. The TINT program is an adaptation of their successful Tuning in to Kids® (TIK) parenting program and is supported by research showing that it helps parents and teens.
Who is this workshop designed for? Is the program suitable for all types of families and parenting styles?
The program is designed to be inclusive and adaptable to various family structures and parenting styles.
It is for parents, carers and any adult currently facing challenges in raising teenagers and needing immediate support.
It will suit parents and carers of teens between the ages of 12 to 18, or for teens in Year 7 through to Year 12.
What will I gain from attending this workshop? What does the program teach me?
You learn how to recognise, understand and support your teenager’s emotions better, and respond in a supportive manner.
You will gain ready-to-use strategies that can help you address specific issues you’re facing with your teen. You’ll also receive valuable handouts with tips and techniques you can implement immediately.
By attending this program, you will gain valuable insights into the teenage brain, effective communication techniques, strategies for setting boundaries, managing conflicts, and promoting your teenager’s emotional well-being.
You’ll also have the opportunity to share experiences with other parents and receive practical advice from experts in the field.
How can I know if the strategies are working for my family? What does success look like?
Success means a better understanding of emotions for you and your teen; improved communication, and a stronger bond with your teenager.
Also, just looking at the improvement and positive changes in your family dynamics will be an indicator of success.
What topics will be covered in the workshop?
We cover a range of topics across the six sessions, including:
- Ability to connect with your teen
- Facing challenges together
- Supporting your teen with emotions
- Dealing with conflict
- Strategies to enjoy parenting your teen
- Current topics such as: vaping, drugs and alcohol, toxic friendships, etc.
You’ll take away strategies that explore effective communication techniques, gain a better understanding of your teen, learn how to manage conflicts, establish boundaries, and nurture a healthy parent-teen relationship.
I’m concerned about my teenager’s mental health. Will this be addressed?
Yes, we have a dedicated session on nurturing emotional well-being, where we’ll look at recognising signs of stress, anxiety, and depression in teenagers.
While we won’t be able to go in-depth about your teen’s mental health in the sessions, we’ll guide you on when and how to seek professional help (if needed). We also offer ongoing group support after the workshop.
Is there a follow-up or support system after the workshop?
Yes, there is! By attending a program you automatically have access to our online support group. This closed group provides a safe space for parents to share experiences, ask questions, and receive ongoing guidance.
We’ll also provide you with a list of recommended resources for further learning and support after the workshop.
Do I include my teenager with me during the program?
The 6-week program is designed for parents and caregivers, but we understand the value of involving teenagers in discussions. There is amply opportunity to practice the techniques with your teen.
We do have another program called ‘Real Talk with Teens’ which is for teens only and is delivered via schools and community groups. If you’re interested in this program please get in contact with us!
What qualifications and experience do the workshop facilitators have?
Michelle and Tara are trained Tuning in to Teens facilitators. We are qualified and experienced in counselling, education and facilitation. We have extensive knowledge and practical expertise in working with teenagers and families.
Is financial assistance available for the workshop?
We understand that support is essential for everyone, and we strive to make our workshops accessible.
