Tuning in to Teens Program

An overview of the Tuning in to Teens program

Tuning in to Teens™ (TINT) is an evidence-based parenting program designed to strengthen the emotional connection between parents and their children, particularly teenagers.

It has been developed by the team of Professor Sophie Havighurst, Ann Harley and Dr Christiane Kehoe from the University of Melbourne and is an adaptation of their successful Tuning in to Kids® (TIK) parenting program.

The Tuning in to Teens™ program has a core focus on teaching parents and carers emotion coaching skills and specifically focuses on the developmental needs of teenagers.

In the TINT program, there is a greater focus on acceptance and empathy and helping parents and carers to manage their own responses when adolescents reject or push them away as the young person seeks greater independence.

Skills and knowledge

* How to recognise, understand and respond to their young person’s emotions in an accepting and supportive manner.
* How to foster a better understanding and management of emotions in adolescents.

TINT seeks to:

* improve parents’ emotional awareness, regulation, and communication styles,
* improve capacity to establish strong connections with their teen.

The program emphasises connecting and calming before discussing how to address emotional situations. This is a key element for effective emotional coaching.
