Workshop:
Survival Skills for Parents of Teens

What is the “Survival Skills for Parents of Teens” workshop?

Our workshop is a 3-hour intensive session designed to help parents and carers of teenagers.

The workshop will give you practical strategies and tools to help you better connect with your teen, work through any issues as they arise, and create a calm environment.

This workshop is tailored to suit your needs: we cover topics that impact each attendee and their family. It’s not textbook theory – it’s applying strategies straight away for your family.

It will also help you develop a clear direction for your family and feel supported as a parent through our group discussions.

We’ve designed the 3-hour workshop for busy families struggling to find time to attend longer workshops across multiple days or evenings. Our workshop is an intensive session with key strategies you can take away and implement immediately.

We focus on: nurturing healthy communication with your teen, understanding your teen’s behaviour, and building stronger relationships between the two of you.

Why is the workshop face-to-face? Do you do this online too?

We provide workshops online and in person. Both provide you with the tools and strategies to help.

For the October 2023 series of workshops, these are in-person as we value the unique benefits that a face-to-face workshop can offer.

We also know that after the past couple of years with Covid and lockdowns, it might feel daunting to attend face-to-face sessions. It’s like we’re a bit out of practice coming together. It’s a little bit anxiety-inducing, leaving the comfort of our homes. We get it!

But with our in-person workshops, it’s a great opportunity for you to engage in real-time discussions and ask questions. Our environment allows for a more immersive and dynamic experience where you can connect with us and fellow parents on a deeper level.

We will also be posting dates for our online workshop series. Stay tuned!

Who is this workshop designed for?

This workshop is for parents and carers currently facing challenges in raising teenagers and needing immediate support.

It will suit parents and carers of teens between the ages of 12 to 16, or for teens in Year 7 through to Year 10.

What will I gain from attending this workshop?

You will gain ready-to-use strategies that can help you address specific issues you’re facing with your teen. You’ll also receive valuable handouts with tips and techniques you can implement immediately.

By attending this workshop, you will gain valuable insights into the teenage brain, effective communication techniques, strategies for setting boundaries, managing conflicts, and promoting your teenager’s emotional well-being.

You’ll also have the opportunity to share experiences with other parents and receive practical advice from experts in the field.

What topics will be covered in the workshop?

In just 3-hours we’ll cover a range of topics that include:

  • Ability to connect with your teen
  • Facing challenges together
  • Supporting your teen with emotions
  • Dealing with conflict
  • Strategies to enjoy parenting your teen

You’ll take away strategies that look at effective communication techniques, understanding your teen a bit better, managing conflicts, setting boundaries, and nurturing a healthy parent-teen relationship.

I’m concerned about my teenager’s mental health. Will this be addressed?

Yes, we have a dedicated session on nurturing emotional well-being, where we’ll look at recognising signs of stress, anxiety, and depression in teenagers.

While we won’t be able to go in-depth about your teen’s mental health in this short session, we’ll guide you on when and how to seek professional help (if needed). We also provide ongoing group support for you after the workshop.

Is there a follow-up or support system after the workshop?

Yes, there is! By attending this workshop, you automatically have access to our online support group that meets weekly. This closed group provides a safe space for parents to share experiences, ask questions, and receive ongoing guidance.

We’ll also provide you with a list of recommended resources for further learning and support after the workshop.

Is it possible to bring my teenager with me to the workshop?

This workshop is designed for parents and caregivers, but we understand the value of involving teenagers in discussions. If you believe your teenager would benefit from attending, please contact us to discuss the possibility. But we do have another program called ‘Your Voice’ which is for teens only.

What qualifications do the workshop facilitators have?

Michelle and Tara are trained ‘Tuning in to Teens’ facilitators. They are experienced professionals in psychology, education and facilitation. They have extensive knowledge and practical expertise in working with teenagers and families.

Is financial assistance available for the workshop?

We understand that support is essential for everyone, and we strive to make our workshops accessible.
